Staff from across the Oxford Cancer Centre at the Churchill took a moment today to mark the ten year milestone since it first opened. Cake was shared across all the medical teams and  spontaneous singing of happy birthday took place.

A world leader in its research and treatment of cancer, and a national centre of excellence, the Cancer Centre first opened its doors in spring 2009, providing advanced treatment and care under one roof.

As it was being built, our charity ran a successful campaign to raise around £3 million to help equip and furnish the new centre.

Alongside high tech equipment, like the Computer Integrated Operating Theatres, the charity also funded gardens, artwork and patient sitting rooms, to make the hospital more comfortable and welcoming for cancer patients and their families.

Today, the charity continues to make a huge difference to the thousands of patients treated for cancer every year, funding little things like up to date newspapers and magazines on wards and more comfortable chairs for chemotherapy, to bigger projects like creating an Outreach Cancer Pharmacy and the refurbishment of Day Surgery Unit.

And Oxford Hospitals Charity is today calling for local people to continue to show their support for the Oxford Cancer Centre by getting behind a new fundraising appeal.

Charity CEO, Douglas Graham, explains:

“If you spend any time at the Churchill’s Cancer Centre you cannot help but be utterly inspired by the dedicated staff who work here. At Oxford Hospitals Charity we know that so many patients who make donations, undertake fundraising events and challenges or indeed leave a gift in their will to the cancer centre, are doing so to say thank you for the care they or a loved one has received from these wonderful NHS teams.”

“Ten years ago we asked for help from the Oxfordshire community public to raise £3 million to fund some of the very best medical equipment and facilities for the Cancer and Haematology Centre. Today we ask that those that have a special place in their heart for this centre to consider making a regular gift of £10 to allow us to continue our important work.”

The charity is asking local people to donate £10 a month, as part of the tenth anniversary celebrations.

Local people looking for a challenge can also abseil in September or run the Oxford Half marathon in support of the Churchill
