The couple, from Kidlington, had to cope when their baby son, Barney, had multiple hospital admissions for bronchiolitis.

It was a really tough time for them all, but they say the care he received from the staff at the Oxford Children’s Hospital was amazing. And it’s this that has inspired them to put on their running shoes and take part the OX5 RUN this March.

Jemma explains:

“Barney was admitted to the JR six times in seven months and was cared for across the hospital - in Children’s Emergency Department, Paediatric Intensive Care, High Dependency and on the Bellhouse Drayson ward.

“Every paramedic and each member of staff we saw at the hospital was just amazing. Barney was so well looked after  - as were we -  by such lovely doctors and nurses, many of whom we have now seen on multiple occasions.

“The care he has been given has always been exceptional, everyone goes above and beyond. It meant such a lot to us during a really difficult time”

Following a three-night stay over Christmas, the doctors gave Barney new inhalers to try and since then he has only had one trip to the hospital.

“I’m not sure what further treatment he might need,” said Jemma, “I assume they will continue with the inhalers and monitoring him. He is 19 months old now and doing really well. We are incredibly grateful”

To show their appreciation, they have gathered a team, Barney’s Bears, who will be running the OX5 RUN to raise money for the Oxford Children’s Hospital.  The team have already raised £550 and hope to do even more to say thank you.

Claire Hughes, Supporter Care Assistant, from Oxford Hospitals Charity said: “We are looking forward to seeing Barney’s Bears on the day at Blenheim Palace. Our charity mascot Harry Bear will be at the event and we can’t wait to introduce him to Barney!”
