We would like to say a huge congratulations to Team OPAL who, recently took part in a gruelling 130-mile coast-to-coast bike ride from Whitehaven to South Shields.

The eight-strong team with colleagues from across the trust including five surgeons, a hospital manager, a security officer and a data manager joined forces to fundraise for the Oxford Pancreatic and Liver (OPAL) fund, which is part of Oxford Hospitals Charity.

Michael Silva, Consultant Surgeon, who was one of the key bike ride organisers, said: ‘The weather proved to be one of the biggest challenges with wind and rain battering us at some of the hardest parts of the course.

'However, we are all very determined people and we spurred each other on to keep going!'

‘It was a great challenge, and we are so proud that we have raised almost £9,500 with Gift Aid so far. We would love to hit £10,000  though so that we can put the funds towards patient and staff well-being and ongoing scientific research in this area.’
