News News Transforming Diabetic Foot Care Your generous donations have recently enabled us to purchase a new state-of-the-art ultrasound duplex machine for our diabetic foot clinic at the Churchill Hospital – which has helped to transform the patient experience. This machine plays a crucial role in managing diabetic foot disease by allowing our team to assess blood flow to patients' feet in a timely manner, which is a vital aspect of their care. Diabetic foot disease is one of the most costly complications for the NHS, with £1 out of every £100 of the whole NHS’s budget spent on treating it. This new machine is helping us to optimise patient care and reduce these costs by improving the speed and efficiency of diagnosis and treatment. Consultant Garry Tan shared, "At the Churchill’s diabetic foot clinic, we’ve assembled a multidisciplinary team, including experts from vascular surgery, orthopaedics, microbiology, diabetes, podiatry, and the vascular studies lab. The new ultrasound machine is a game-changer for us. When patients come in with diabetic foot problems, we can now assess their blood supply during the same visit. This immediate assessment allows us to develop a treatment plan on the spot." “Previously, patients faced lengthy delays, often waiting weeks between appointments to get the necessary tests and results. Without the machine, we had to borrow equipment or send patients to another location, adding to their stress and delaying critical care. “Now, with this 'one-stop shop' approach, we can deliver timely and effective treatment, which is essential to manage diabetic foot disease.” Tamsin Rawlings from Oxford Hospitals Charity said; “This machine has transformed the patient experience, enabling the team at the Churchill to provide faster diagnoses, better outcomes, and ultimately, improved care for those suffering from diabetic foot disease. “With early intervention to avoid amputation or further complications to the feet, the team are also helping to protect their patients’ mobility and independence and maintaining quality of life.
