Today we highlight two more of our amazing runners entering the OX5 RUN this March.

The Children’s Hospital at the John Radcliffe holds a very special place in the hearts of Abingdon residents Jack Wootten and wife Megan.

At just six months old, their daughter Annabel was enjoying her weekly swimming lesson, when she started to convulse. Her GP sent her for numerous tests as she continued to have these periods of seizures, which were concerning.

Eventually, she was referred to Dr Rowe at the JR in the Neurology department at the Children’s Hospital, where she was given CT Scans to gain a diagnosis. From her scans, it was determined that she had epilepsy for which she now has regular medication.

But that wasn’t the only time that the Wootten family needed the expertise of the doctors at the Children's Hospital.

Last August Annabel’s temperature was at a concerning level and was continuing to increase, which was setting off her seizures. Jack and Megan, clearly concerned, took her to the GP who sent her to the JR.

She was kept in for five days where she was given a scan on arrival. She was diagnosed with a kidney condition where only one is working properly.

Speaking of the care Annabel received, Jack said: “The staff on the ward were so invested in looking after Annabel. The whole set-up at the hospital was amazing even the small things like offering us a tea or coffee made a difference.

“The staff looked her so well and my wife was even allowed to stay there in her own bed by her side - we can’t thank them enough.

“Going forward Annabel will continue to be under their care, but we know that she is in the best hands.”

Whilst at the hospital Jack noticed a poster advertising the OX5 RUN and thought that it would be a great way to give something back to the hospital.

He asked Megan who also wanted to join in, his dad and even his mum who has a hip problem. And it hasn’t stopped there. Team Annabel as they are now called is now standing at 15 members having already raised over £1,000 with five weeks left to go until the big day!

If Jack and his team of family and friends have inspired you there is still plenty of time to sign up. And remember, the course is suitable for all abilities so you can walk, jog or run the route. Visit www.hospitalcharity.co.uk/OX5RUN for more information.
