Oxford Hospitals Charity has recently launched its new Heartfelt Appeal – aiming to raise over half a million pounds to support the Oxford Heart Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The charity team has worked closely with hospital staff to identify a series of projects and innovations that will help transform cardiothoracic patient care, but we need your help to make it all possible.

Today we are highlighting our goal of funding twenty additional portable chest drains, each costing £4,900.

Over 500 patients every year could benefit from portable chest drains after having surgery at Oxford’s Heart Centre. Your gift today can help make this possible.

Chest drains are a vital part of the care provided at the Oxford Heart Centre used with patients recovering from heart surgery, lung cancer surgery, thoracic surgery, or chest trauma treatment.

Cardiothoracic Ward Manager, Jessica Davies explains: “A major part of recovery for our patients is supported by an important device called a chest drain – they monitor and remove fluid from the chest following surgery. Crucially, the new versions are portable, unlike older and bulky wall-mounted models.

“The lightweight portable devices can be carried easily and safely by patients, encouraging more movement and exercise following surgery which aids recovery.

“With your help we could have all the devices we need to help every patient in our care.”

As well as being so much more portable the new equipment includes enhanced monitoring, which is proven to reduce hospital stays for patients following surgery.

They also include easy-to-read displays with real-time updates, giving reassurance and motivation for patients to help them get active while on the Ward.

And the digital tracking assists clinical decision making, often helping to get patients home more quickly
